Matisse quickly became the leading figure of this movement, with works such as Woman with a Hat (1905), in which vivid, non-realistic colors were applied with complete freedom, breaking with academic conventions.
Matisse was a master of color, using it not only to represent reality, but also to express emotion and create visual harmony. His paintings, such as The Dance (1910) and The Red Studio (1911), are striking examples of his unique approach. By simplifying forms and using intense palettes, he managed to capture the essence of his subjects, whether landscapes, still lifes, or human figures.
Throughout his career, Matisse also explored other forms of artistic expression. He worked in drawing, sculpture, and printmaking, and in the last years of his life, he devoted himself to a technique he called "scissor drawings."
These colored paper cutouts, such as Icarus (1947) and The Sheaf (1953), demonstrate his ability to innovate even in his later years. These works, created while he was bedridden due to health problems, are among the most daring and influential of his oeuvre.
Matisse also made his mark on the world of architecture and design with the Rosary Chapel in Vence, a project he considers the pinnacle of his career. Designed between 1947 and 1951, this chapel in the south of France is a masterpiece of simplicity and spirituality, in which the artist combines stained glass, frescoes, and furniture to create a unique space.
Matisse's works are highly sought-after on the art market. In 2018, his painting "Odalisque couchée aux magnolias" sold for $80.8 million, highlighting his enduring appeal among collectors.
