This role enabled him to produce a series of royal portraits that remain among the most famous in the history of art. Velázquez is also known for his ambitious works that blend portraiture and narrative. Las Meninas (1656), his most famous masterpiece, is a fascinating reflection on the gaze, representation, and the role of the artist. This complex painting, which depicts Princess Margarita surrounded by her ladies-in-waiting and Velázquez himself, is often interpreted as a statement on the artist's position in society.

Velázquez also played a key role in enriching the Spanish royal collections. During his travels in Italy, he studied the great masters such as Titian, Raphael, and Michelangelo, incorporating their influence into his own work while also acquiring works for the Spanish court. These travels refined his style and broadened his artistic vision, as evidenced by works such as Portrait of Pope Innocent X (1650), considered one of the most powerful portraits in history.
In his later years, Velázquez continued to produce works of incomparable depth and virtuosity. His brushwork became increasingly free, heralding the later developments of Impressionism and modern art. He died in Madrid in 1660, leaving behind an artistic legacy of exceptional significance.
Today, Velázquez's works are housed in the world's greatest museums, including the Prado in Madrid, which houses an exceptional collection of his paintings.
His works command incredible prices on the art market, although their rarity makes any sale exceptional. In 2011, a painting attributed to Velázquez, Portrait of a Man, sold for over €3 million, highlighting the enduring interest in this artist.
